Puerto Vallarta Weather in September: Rain, Temperatures

Puerto Vallarta weather in September historically has the heaviest rainfall of the year. September is a risky weather month for visitors.
Puerto Vallarta is a popular port of call with Mexican Riviera cruises that visit the western coast of Mexico. It also is popular with resort visitors. But it is not popular during the annual rainy season, which goes from June through October.
September Temperatures
Puerto Vallarta temperatures in September have an average daytime high of 92 degrees Fahrenheit or 32 Celsius, according to Servicio Meteorológico Nacional, Mexico’s national meteorology service. They have an average nighttime low of 73 degrees Fahrenheit or 23 Celsius.
By comparison, daytime temperatures hover in the low 80s Fahrenheit or mid 20s Celsius in the winter. Nighttime winter temperatures drop even lower into the low 60s Fahrenheit or mid teens Celsius. So September temperatures show a big increase over the winter.
September water temperatures are comfortable, unlike the winter. They often feel warm to balmy for swimming throughout the day.
September Rainfall
September rainfall historically is the heaviest of the year for Puerto Vallarta, according to Servicio Meteorológico Nacional.
Average rainfall jumps to a high for the year of 15 inches. September is the fourth month of the rainy season that goes through October.
The average jumps from seven inches in June to 13 inches in July and declines slightly to 12 inches in August. These heavier than normal rainfalls are the result of the annual Pacific hurricane season.
By comparison, Puerto Vallarta in February through April historically has almost no rain at all during its brief dry season.
