Puerto Vallarta weather in January has some of the driest weather of the year for this Mexican Riviera cruise port.

The city on the western coast of Mexico is a popular port of call because of beaches, attractions and a long dry season that goes from November through May.

The average rainfall during the dry season is only about one inch per month.

January Temperatures

Puerto Vallarta has warmer temperatures than another popular Mexican Riviera port at Cabo San Lucas, which is to the north.

Temperatures in January for Puerto Vallarta have an average daytime high of 84 degrees Fahrenheit or 29 Celsius, according to Mexico’s national meteorology service (Servicio Meteorológico Nacional). They have a nighttime low of 62 degrees Fahrenheit or 17 Celsius.

January temperatures are the lowest of the year and equal the same in February. Water temperatures may feel chilly at times, especially in the mornings, because of low nighttime temperatures.

By comparison, daytime temperatures average 90 degrees Fahrenheit or higher from June through November. They are the best months to visit for warm seawater, but they are not the best months for rainfall.

January Rainfall

Puerto Vallarta historically has a low risk of rain in January. Rainfall averages a little more than one inch, according to Servicio Meteorológico Nacional, Mexico’s national meteorology service. It rains an average of only two days during the month.

January is the third month of the dry season when it rains an average of one inch a month through May. February through April historically have almost no rainfall at all.

By comparison, the port’s rainy season from June through September is intense because of the annual Pacific hurricane season.

Then, the average rainfall from July through September is about 12 to 15 inches per month.

Puerto Vallarta weather in January offers warm temperatures and low risk of rain. But March and April offer even warmer temperatures and an even lower risk of rain. They are better months to visit.
