Grand Cayman Weather in December

The numbers don’t lie when it comes to Grand Cayman weather in December.

Grand Cayman is the biggest and most popular of the Cayman Islands. It is a major destination for western Caribbean cruises partly because of attractions that include Seven Mile Beach and Stingray City.

Seven Mile Beach is one of the most famous beaches in the Caribbean. Stingray City is one of the region’s most popular tourist attractions because visitors can get into the ocean water on a shallow sandbar and interact with friendly stingrays.

Tourism to Grand Cayman climbs and falls depending on the weather and the time of year.

December is the second most popular month of the year for people to visit Grand Cayman in the Cayman Islands for a vacation stay.

It is second only to March. That month often sees an increase in Caribbean travel because of children and college students getting a spring break from their schools.

December also is a popular month for visiting the Caribbean because of people who want to escape the cold northern winters in the U.S., Canada and Europe.

Grand Cayman Temperatures

The average high temperature of 87 degrees Fahrenheit or about 31 degrees Celsius in December may sound more attractive than freezing cold and two feet of snow.

December also is one of the warmest Caribbean islands throughout the year. The average high of 87 degrees Fahrenheit is one of the highest temperatures among all Caribbean islands during that month.

Although temperatures historically stay warm during the day, temperatures drop more than usual at night. The average low temperature at Grand Cayman during December is 67 degrees Fahrenheit or 19 degrees Celsius, according to the National Meteorological Service of the Cayman Islands.

Low nighttime temperatures will often make ocean swimming uncomfortable, especially in the mornings.

Grand Cayman Rainfall

The island has two distinct weather patterns. They are a rainy season from May through November and a dry season from January through April. December is a transition month.

The average rainfall during the rainy season over a 30-year period ranges from about five and a half inches in May to a high point of eight inches in September and October. The average for the dry season is about two inches a month. The average for December is more than three inches with heavier rain more likely in the early part of the month.

Because of these rainy and dry seasons, cruise visits to Grand Cayman start climbing in December and continue until April before starting to decline again.
