Cayman Islands weather in May wastes no time in getting hot.

The hugely popular Caribbean cruise port at Grand Cayman attracts more than 1.6 million cruise visitors every year, according to recent statistics from the Caribbean Tourism Organization.

Nearly 400,000 more visit the Caymans for multi-night vacations.

Grand Cayman is a popular destination in part because of its easy access for cruise ships as well as several major attractions including Seven Mile Beach, Stingray City and the Cayman Turtle Farm.

But it also attracts visitors who want to experience warm weather. The average weather in May delivers it with ease.

Cayman Temperatures in May

The average high temperature in May is 90 degrees Fahrenheit or 32 degrees Celsius, according to historical data from the National Meteorological Service of the Cayman Islands.

That high temperature makes Grand Cayman one of the warmest destinations in the Caribbean during the month. The island also is one of the warmest in the region for the entire year.

The average low temperature, which takes place mostly at night, is 72 degrees Fahrenheit or 22 degrees Celsius. Nighttime temperatures may be cool enough to require a jacket while outdoors.

They also may be cool enough to make water temperatures a bit uncomfortable early in the morning when combined with trade winds.

Cayman Rainfall in May

Grand Cayman usually delivers warm temperatures in May, but it also delivers more rainfall.

The island has a dry season that runs from January through April, which also are the peak months for western Caribbean cruises that stop there. Rainfall averages less than two inches a month, the National Meteorological Service says.

The average jumps to nearly six inches in May. It climbs each month until it reaches an historical high point of nearly nine inches in October during the most active time of the Caribbean hurricane season.

That historical average of six inches in May is one of the highest amounts of rain among the Caribbean destinations.

Many Caribbean destinations have a brief and mild increase in rain during May. The level drops in June for most of these destinations except for Grand Cayman.

Should You Go in May?

Travelers who like hot weather will find that going to the Cayman Islands in May should deliver what they want.

But the jump in average rainfall brings the risk of bad weather, cloudy skies and less time on the island’s beaches.

April is a better choice for warm weather with less chance of rain.
