Grand Cayman weather in May wastes no time in getting hot—and rainy.
The hugely popular Caribbean cruise port on Grand Cayman island attracts more than 1.6 million cruise visitors every year, according to the Caribbean Tourism Organization.
Another 400,000 more visit the Caymans for multi-night vacations. Most of them also go to Grand Cayman.
Average Temperatures
The average high temperature for Grand Cayman in May is 90 degrees Fahrenheit or 32 degrees Celsius, according to the National Meteorological Service of the Cayman Islands.
That high temperature makes Grand Cayman one of the warmest destinations in the Caribbean during the month. The island also is one of the warmest in the region for the entire year.
The average low temperature is 72 degrees Fahrenheit or 22 degrees Celsius, according to the National Meteorological Service. It takes place mostly at night. Nighttime temperatures may sometimes feel cool enough to require a light jacket and long pants while outdoors in the early morning or late evening.
They also may feel cool enough to make seawater temperatures a bit chilly early in the morning when combined with trade winds. But they warm up quickly thanks to hot daytime temperatures.
Average Rainfall
Grand Cayman usually delivers warmer temperatures in May, but it also delivers more rainfall.
The island has a dry season that runs from January through April, which also are the peak months for western Caribbean cruises that stop at the island. Rainfall averages less than two inches a month during this period, according to the National Meteorological Service.
The average rainfall for Grand Cayman jumps to nearly six inches in May, according to the National Meteorological Service. It climbs each month until it reaches an historical high point of nearly nine inches in October during the most active time of the Caribbean hurricane season.
That historical average of six inches in May is one of the highest amounts of rain among the Caribbean destinations during the month. So May is not an ideal time for travelers to visit. April is much better for a combination of warm temperatures and low risk of rain.
Many Caribbean destinations have a brief and mild increase in rain during May. The level drops in June for most of these destinations except for Grand Cayman.
