Belize weather in September has the most rain of the year for this Central American country.

Belize City on the Caribbean coast is a common port of call for “exotic” western Caribbean cruises. The city is a starting point for many shore excursions to rainforests and Mayan ruins. The rainforests exist because Belize has plenty of rain throughout the year, especially in September.

September Rainfall

Belize City historically averages more than 11 inches of rain in September, according to the National Meteorological Service of Belize. It is one of the highest levels of any Caribbean destination during the month. It’s also the highest of the year for Belize City.

Rain is especially heavy during the month because September is the most active month of the Caribbean hurricane season. The Caribbean averages four tropical storms during the month. Three of them on average grow into hurricanes, and two of the three become major hurricanes.

Although hurricanes and tropical storms rarely hit Belize directly, they often pass near the country and bring heavier downpours of rain.

The 11-plus inches of rain in September compares to a low point of two inches in February and March during the country’s brief dry season. The dry season goes from February through April. The rainy season goes from May through December. January is a transition month with moderate levels of rain.

Belize temperatures in September have an average high of 88 degrees Fahrenheit or 31 Celsius, according to the National Meteorological Service of Belize. The average low is 75 degrees Fahrenheit or 24 Celsius.

The average high usually takes place during the day while the average low usually occurs at night.

These temperatures are about the same as June through August. In contrast, the average high is 82 degrees Fahrenheit or 28 Celsius in January, which is the coldest month of the year.

September is the riskiest time of the year to visit Belize because of the chance of heavy rains. The best times to visit Belize are February and especially March during the dry season. March is a better choice because temperatures are warmer.
