Belize weather in May historically is a transition month between the annual dry season and the annual rainy season.

Belize City is a common port of call with “exotic” western Caribbean cruises. The city is not known for attractions. The countryside offers much more.

Belize often has heavy rains between June and December. They create ecotourism attractions such as rainforest hikes. The country also is well known for its extensive Mayan ruins.

Belize Temperatures in May

Belize temperatures in May reach an average high of 89 degrees Fahrenheit or 32 Celsius, according to the National Meteorological Service of Belize. High temperatures usually occur during the day.

The average low temperature is 76 degrees Fahrenheit or 24 Celsius. Low temperatures usually take place at night.

May temperatures are slightly above average for the year. They are warmer than most Caribbean destinations during the month.

By comparison, temperatures climb only a few degrees higher from June through September, which are the hottest months of the year. But they aren’t popular months for visitors because they have quite a bit more rain.

Average Rainfall

Belize City averages four inches of rain in May. It’s still a fairly low level for a rainy destination such as Belize. It is higher than many other Caribbean destinations during the month, which often average two to three inches except for the dry islands of Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao.

But rainfall in Belize isn’t frequent in May. On average, it rains only six days during the month. So when it does rain, the rain is often heavy.

May is the final month of a brief dry season that begins in February.

By comparison, September and October average more than 10 inches a month. Belize has some of the highest rainfall in the Caribbean during those months, which are the peak months of the Caribbean hurricane season.

April is a better month to visit Belize because of less rain. But early May avoids some of the heavy rains that are on the way.
