Belize weather in October offers plenty of rain in this Central American country.

Belize City is on the Caribbean coast. It is a common port of call for “exotic” western Caribbean cruises. Cruise visitors take many shore excursions to nearby rainforests and Mayan ruins. The rainforests exist because Belize has heavy rainfall throughout much of the year, especially in October.

Average Rainfall

Belize City averages more than 10 inches of rain in October, according to the National Meteorological Service of Belize. It’s one of the highest levels of the year. It also is one of the highest levels of any Caribbean destination during the month, along with Cancun and Cozumel.

Rain is especially heavy in October because it is the second most active month of the Caribbean hurricane season. Historically, the Caribbean averages four tropical storms during the month. But hurricanes are rare in October. Only September is worse with an average of three hurricanes.

Hurricanes and tropical storms usually don’t hit Belize directly. Instead, some of them pass near the country and bring more rain.

October’s high rainfall compares to a low point of two inches in February and March and three inches in April during the country’s brief dry season, which goes from February through April. The rainy season goes from May through December. January is a transition month between the dry and rainy seasons.

Belize temperatures in October have an average daytime high of 86 degrees Fahrenheit or 30 Celsius, according to the National Meteorological Service of Belize. The average low is 73 degrees Fahrenheit or 23 Celsius.

These temperatures are only slightly cooler than June through September, which have about the same temperatures. In contrast, the average high is 82 degrees Fahrenheit or 28 Celsius in January, which is the coldest month of the year.

October is one of the riskiest times of the year to visit Belize because of rain. The best times to visit Belize are February and especially March during the dry season when temperatures are warming and the risk of rain is low.
