Belize Car Rentals

Demian Solano, Belize Tourist Board

Cruise visitors to Belize City who rent a car should get a 4x4, especially if they want to tour the country.

Tourists to Belize have a variety of transportation options. Car rentals in Belize are a good idea for tourists who wish to see parts of the country not frequently traveled to by bus or water taxis.

Belize, located on the northeastern coast of Central America, is bordered by Mexico, Guatemala, and the Caribbean Sea. English is the official language of the country, but Spanish and English Creole are commonly spoken.

The bus system is a primary form of transportation in Belize. Locals use it regularly, and most tourists have a positive experience with it.

Bus terminals are located in Belize City and Belmopan. In big cities, the bus system runs frequently, but smaller towns may only have one bus stop per day.

Buses are either Greyhound Buses or school buses.

The country is divided into zones. Buses operate within their zones, making bus transportation easier to maneuver.

Water taxis take people from the mainland to the islands and barrier reef attractions. Water taxis should be arranged ahead of time.

Small airports located around Belize provide helicopters and small airplanes as means of travel. This is one of the most popular ways of getting around the country.

Currently, Belize does not have any railway transport.

Tourists choosing to rent cars are advised to rent 4x4s, as many of the roads around the country can be bumpy. The roads have many speed bumps, and road signs can be few and far between.

Car renters are advised to have a map of the country, and directions to wherever they are going. The road system can be complicated and difficult to navigate.

The highways are paved two lane roads. Most other roads in Belize are dirt roads.

Most car rental agencies have specific requirements for renters. Drivers must have a valid driver’s license, and drivers under the age of 25 often incur an additional fee.
