Cruise and overnight visitors will find that St. Lucia weather in January is a big improvement over cold northern winters.

But it is one of the coolest months of the year for this popular island in the eastern Caribbean.

It also experiences more days with rain than most other months of the year.

So while January away from snow sounds good, January in St. Lucia is a nice but not ideal time to visit the island.

The island has fewer tourists in January than December or February through May, according to statistics from the Caribbean Tourism Organization. Rainy weather is a possible reason for the drop in visits.

Average Temperatures

The average high temperature in St. Lucia during January is 84 degrees Fahrenheit or 29 Celsius, the St. Lucia Meteorological Service says.

The average low temperature is 74 Fahrenheit or 23 Celsius. The lows take place mostly at night.

Seawater temperatures will range in the upper 70s Fahrenheit. The water is often warm enough for swimming because of the island’s southern location. They are sometimes chilly in the mornings.

Temperatures stay about the same in February and then begin to climb. They reach a high point in the upper 80s Fahrenheit or about 31 Celsius from May through October.

Average Rainfall

St. Lucia has less than three inches of rain historically in January, although the actual total for any single year will vary a bit.

This average falls in line with a normal amount of rain for most Caribbean islands outside of the rainy season.

But St. Lucia also experience about 18 days of rain during the month, which is higher than normal for a dry season.

It means the typical visitors will experience rain on more than half of the days of their visit if the average holds true.

Vacation planners will find that February through May often have less rain and fewer rain days. It makes those months more appealing for a visit then.

Whether to Go to St. Lucia in January

January is a better month to visit St. Lucia than December, which has more rainfall. But it is not as good as February through April or May.

The month is a good time to go for anyone eager to leave northern cold. They risk somewhat more rain and cooler seawater temperatures than the spring months of the year.
