A St. Lucia shore excursion to the quaint town of Soufriere is a chance to see the island’s scenic beauty and explore some major nearby attractions.

The town is 28 miles and a slow drive south of the Castries cruise port. It gets its name from the odor of sulfur that rises from the nearby Sulphur Springs.

Soufriere has the usual stores, restaurants and street vendors for tourists. Most excursions emphasize the nearby attractions.

The Pitons are twin peaks at 2,000 feet tall that have been named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

The Pitons are home to steaming mud baths (my wife and daughter enjoyed them) and drive-in volcano at the Sulphur Springs.

It was easy for us to admire the size, shape and dominance of the spires during our visit to St. Lucia and ATV tour of the area. The Pitons are hard to ignore for any excursion along that part of the island.

The area around Soufriere also is home to working cocoa plantations, former sugar estates and lush botanical gardens.

Fond Doux Plantation and Resort is a 135-acre working cocoa plantation that also has cottages for stayover visitors. The plantation is more than 250 years old, according to its website.

Diamond Falls Botanical Gardens has six acres of tropical flowers and other plant life. The gardens, which are five minutes from Soufriere, get its name from the warm mineral waterfalls on the property.

The cost is $7 for adults and half price for children. The estate is open seven days a week.

Other nearby attractions include Anse Chastanet beach, which is the location of various resorts.

Shore Excursion Prices

One national excursion vendor had a five-hour excursion for the above activities with prices beginning at $73 per person. Prices include entry fees for destinations such as Diamond Falls Botanical Gardens.

A major cruise line had a “land and sea” combo tour to Soufriere as well as the gardens plus a catamaran sail and beach swimming. The cost was $89 for people 13 year and older and $79 for children 12 and younger.
