Dominica Weather in December: Rain, Temperatures

Dominica weather in December may not offer much joy to cruise and hotel visitors. The average rainfall is 10 inches during the month, which means the island usually gets drenched.
This small, rainy and mountainous island in the eastern Caribbean between Guadeloupe to the north and Martinique to the south is known for wet weather and lush rainforests.
Guadeloupe and Martinique also have some of the heaviest rains in the Caribbean. But Dominica often beats them both.
Caribbean cruise ships sometimes visit one of these three islands during eastern and southern Caribbean cruises as they travel among larger and more popular islands. The nearby larger islands include Antigua, St. Kitts and St. Lucia.
Rainfall in December
The average rainfall for Dominica in December is nearly 10 inches, according to the Dominica Meteorological Service. It’s much higher than the dry season, which has an average of four to six inches.
It isn’t nearly as bad as the 15 inches in November, which is the highest average rainfall of the year. Still, the December rainfall is much higher than most Caribbean islands during the month.
The Caribbean hurricane season officially goes from June through November. The final month of the season usually has few tropical storms or hurricanes in the region.
Regardless, November is a bad month for Dominica, and it may impact the island’s weather in December. Anyone thinking about going to the island in December should consider going toward the end of the month rather than the beginning. It may lower the risk of rain.
Temperatures in December
The average high temperature for Dominica in December is 84 degrees Fahrenheit or about 29 Celsius, according to the Dominica Meteorological Service. It is near the low point of the year.
The average low of 72 degrees Fahrenheit or 22 Celsius in December also is near the low. January through March are slightly cooler.
Despite the rain and cool weather, statistics from the Caribbean Tourism Organization show that visits to the island go up in December. They are higher than January through June as well as September and November. Tourism jumps in part because of winter break from schools.
