Vacationers may not find much joy from Dominica weather in December. The average weather is 10 inches of rain and a high temperature of 84 degrees Fahrenheit.

This small, rainy and mountainous island in the Caribbean between Guadeloupe to the north and Martinique to the south is known for wet weather and lush rainforests.

Guadeloupe and Martinique also have some of the heaviest rains in the Caribbean. But Dominica often beats them both.

Caribbean cruise ships visit one of these three islands during eastern and southern Caribbean cruises as they travel between larger islands. The nearby larger islands include Antigua, St. Kitts and St. Lucia.

The weather in Dominica during December keeps most cruise ships away. The island is more popular during a dry season that goes from January through April.

Rainfall in December

The average rainfall of nearly 10 inches in December is much higher than the dry season with an average of four to six inches, according to 30 years of data from the Dominica Meteorological Service.

It isn't nearly as bad as the 15 inches in November, which is the highest average rainfall of the year.

The Caribbean hurricane season officially goes from June through November. The final month of the season usually has few tropical storms or hurricanes in the region.

Regardless, November is a bad month for Dominica, and it may impact the island's weather in December. Anyone thinking about going to the island in December should consider going toward the end of the month rather than the beginning. It may lower the risk of rain.

Temperatures in December

The average high temperature of 84 degrees Fahrenheit or about 29 Celsius is near the low point of the year.

The average low of 72 Fahrenheit or 22 Celsius also is near the low. January through March are slightly cooler.

Despite the rain and cool weather, statistics from the Caribbean Tourism Organization show that visits to the island go up in December. They are higher than January through June as well as September and November.
