Dominica Weather in October

Of all the places to go in the Caribbean in October, Dominica is the one to avoid the most.

Don't take that as a dig against Dominica. The island is gorgeous for large parts of the year because of its lush undergrowth, rain forests and waterfalls.

The island is growing in popularity especially among cruise visitors, with more than four times as many cruise visitors coming to the island as people who visit for longer stays.

It is a popular destination for eco tourists -- the kind of people who like hiking through such a luxuriously green landscape.

But it gets that way because the island has one of the highest amounts of rainfall among any destinations in the Caribbean.

It especially gets that way during the peak of the Caribbean hurricane season, which runs from June through November.

Rain Inches
If an award could be given out for most rainfall, Dominica would get it. The total rainfall over a 20-year history of data from the World Weather Organization shows that the island averages 13.1 inches of rain during the month.

That total far exceeds any other total in the Caribbean. But it's actually not as bad as November when the island averages an even more impressive 14.7 inches.

Other islands including some nearby are more likely to receive five to six inches during the month.

Also by comparison, the island receives the least amount of rain in February, when it averages only four inches.

Average Temperatures

At least it stays warm. The average high temperature during October is 84 degrees Fahrenheit and 29 degrees Celsius.

The average low temperature is 74 degrees Fahrenheit and 23 degrees Celsius.

But warm weather won't matter much if it is raining cats and dogs outside.

Should You Go in October?

Dominica is more popular as a cruise port than as a long-term stay.

As a result, few cruise ships visit during October because of the potential for rain. But it does get some cruise visitors.

Anyone taking a cruise in October or November that includes Dominica on the itinerary should expect rain in the forecast.

Otherwise, the only people who might want to visit are ones who enjoy rain -- a whole lot of it.
