Dominica, also known as the “Nature Island”, has a total of 780 kilometers of roads. Because public transportation does not extend throughout the entire island, car rentals can be a good idea for travellers wishing to see the full extent of Dominica’s beauty.

In terms of public transportation, Dominica has a minibus service. These buses will stop anywhere on the street, as long as it is waved down, and can be spotted by the letter H in its licence plate.

The buses are affordable, rarely costing more than 4 USD, but can be unreliable.

Taxis are another way to get around in Dominica. Taxis can be hired at both the Melville Hall and Canefield airports, as well as most hotels.

It is wise to call ahead of time to reserve a taxi, especially for trips after 6:00 p.m.

Taxis are a reliable method of transportation, but can be expensive. A trip across the island can cost up to 90 USD.  It’s important to negotiate the fare before getting into the taxi.

Most car rentals in Dominica can be picked up at the airport. A variety of cars can be rented.

It is recommended to rent a car with four wheel drive, as some of the roads can be rough and rocky in the countryside.

When renting a car, it’s important to ask about hidden fees and age restrictions. Many car rental companies incur an added fee for drivers under 25 years of age or over 65 years of age.

Most car rental agencies in Dominica require drivers to purchase a local permit, usually costing around 12 USD.
