St. Maarten weather in October takes a small break from the heavy rains that typically fall during the peak months of the Caribbean hurricane season.

It’s a surprising change for the bad weather that typically hits the Caribbean in September and October. That’s not true of other destinations.

The official Caribbean hurricane season runs from June 1 through Nov. 30. September and October get the worst of it for many destinations.

St. Maarten doesn’t exactly get away from the bad stuff in October, but it does better than September and especially November.

The following numbers are based on a 30-year history of the island’s weather. Actual results will vary from year to year, but they show common patterns.

Rainfall

Total rainfall for St. Maarten in October is about 4.5 inches, according to the Meteorological Department of St. Maarten. It is slightly better than the five inches in September and six inches in November.

The total number of days it rains during the month is 14, which is somewhat in line with other Caribbean destinations.

It may even thunder about three or four days during the month.

Beachgoers may want to know that the average cloud cover is only slightly higher in the fall (including October) than other months of the year.

Whether to Go

Whether to go to St. Maarten in October is not as easy of a decision as whether to go to Cozumel in October. That Mexican island usually gets drenched during the month.

If October is the preferred month for vacationing in the Caribbean, other islands have lower chances of rainfall, especially Aruba.

If St. Maarten is the preferred choice and any month is an option, then January through July are better choices because of much lower risk of rain.
