Cozumel weather in August historically has hot temperatures and plenty of rainfall.

The largest and most popular Mexican island is a major destination for western Caribbean cruises. But Cozumel is more popular from December through April. That’s when rainfall is usually lower than it is during hotter and wetter summer months like August.

There are worse months to go. The island usually gets even more drenched in September and October than it does in August.

Temperatures in August

The average high temperature in Cozumel during August is 91 degrees Fahrenheit or 33 Celsius, according to Servicio Meteorológico Nacional, Mexico’s national meteorology service. It is the highest temperature of the year along with May and July. June is only one degree cooler.

The average low temperature is 74 degrees Fahrenheit or 23 Celsius. The average highs usually take place during the peak of the day, and the lows occur mostly during nights.

Water temperatures during the day range about midway between the highs and lows of the day. They are cooler in the mornings and warmer in the afternoons.

These averages are based on 30 years of historical data and vary somewhat from year to year. But they offer trends that make it easier for vacationers to predict the weather.

The annual Caribbean hurricane season begins June 1 and ends Nov. 30. Rainfall in the Caribbean gradually increases during the summer and reaches a high point in September and October.

For Cozumel, rainfall historically spikes briefly in June to nearly eight inches. It drops to about five inches in July and increases to nearly six inches in August, according to Servicio Meteorológico Nacional. It is nearly 10 inches a month in September and October, which are the worst months to visit the island.

In contrast, rainfall averages about two inches a month from February through April. So August is not the worst month of the year for rain, but it’s also far from the best.

Historically, it rains about 13 days during the month compared to only four days in March and April and about 16 days in September and October.
