Cozumel visitors will find weather in August has an average high temperature of 91 degrees Fahrenheit and rainfall of nearly six inches.

The largest and most popular island off the coast of Mexico is a major western Caribbean cruise port destination. But it’s more popular from December through April when rainfall is usually lower than it is during hotter and wetter summer months like August.

There are worse months to go. The island usually gets drenched in September and October.

Temperatures in August

The average high temperature during the month of 91 Fahrenheit or 33 Celsius is the highest of the year along with May and July, according to the country’s National Water Commission. June is only one degree cooler.

The average low temperature is 74 Fahrenheit or 23 Celsius. The average highs usually take place during the peak of the day, and the lows occur mostly during nights.

Water temperatures during the day range about midway between the highs and lows of the day. They are cooler in the mornings and warmer in the afternoons.

These averages are based on 30 years of historical data and vary somewhat from year to year. But they offer trends that make it easier for vacationers to predict the weather.

Rainfall in August

The annual Caribbean hurricane season begins June 1 and ends Nov. 30. Rainfall in the Caribbean gradually increases during the summer and reaches a high point in September and October.

For Cozumel, rainfall historically spikes briefly in June to nearly eight inches and drops to about five inches in July and nearly six inches in August. It is nearly 10 inches a month in September and October.

In contrast, rainfall averages about two inches a month from February through April. So August is not the worst month of the year for rain, but it’s also far from the best.

Historically, it rains about 13 days during the month compared to only four days in March and April and about 16 days in September and October.
