Some of us like Caribbean weather warm and dry. For Cozumel, the weather in April is HOT and dry.

The largest Mexican island, which lies just off the coast from Playa del Carmen, is known for beaches, snorkeling, food and Mayan ruins.

It also is known for warm weather. The average weather in April has temperatures reaching 90 degrees Fahrenheit and rainfall of less than two inches.

Cozumel is a major western Caribbean cruise destination from January through April. Those four months are the driest of the year, and they also give northerners a chance to escape cold and snowy winters.

Temperatures in April

The average high temperature in April of 90 Fahrenheit or 32 Celsius is a peak level for temperatures through August, according to historical data from the Mexican National Water Commission.

Cozumel is one of the hottest destinations in the Caribbean. Visitors will find that April temperatures border on being uncomfortable. But summer humidity is even more uncomfortable, as we found out during our cruise visit there.

Nighttime temperatures average only 71 Fahrenheit or 22 Celsius, which is cooler than most destinations.

The cooler nighttime temperatures bring down water temperatures to the point where they may feel a bit chilly in the mornings. But the hot afternoon sun will make swimming more comfortable as the day goes forward.

Rainfall in April

The dry season from January through April averages less than two inches of rain per month, according to 30 years of meteorological data.

Even better, April averages only four days of rain per month, which is the lowest of the year along with March.

By comparison, rainfall averages four inches in May and gradually increases to 10 inches during the peak months of the Caribbean hurricane season in September and October.

Between the warm temperatures and low risk of rain, April and March are two of the best months to visit the island.
