Best and Worst Times to Visit Manzanillo

Manzanillo’s average weather ranges from extreme dry to extreme wet. No doubt most visitors will want the dry season.

This cruise port on the Mexican Riviera is about 170 miles south of another popular cruise port at Puerto Vallarta in the state of Jalisco.

The city is known for its beaches, fishing and historical sites. It also overlooks two bays—Manzanillo and Santiago.

Its location means temperatures will be warmer, but more importantly it feels the impact of the Pacific hurricane season, which runs from mid May to the end of November.

The best time to visit Manzanillo is November through early May when the average monthly rainfall is one inch or less. The worst time is June through October when the risk of rain skyrockets.

Even though the season officially begins in the middle of May, few major storms or hurricanes start to appear until later in the year.

Manzanillo has about five inches of rain and nine rain days on average in June, according to historical data from the Mexico National Water Commission.

Storm and hurricane activity picks up starting in July. Total rainfall increases to nearly six inches, but then it jumps to more than eight inches in August and more than 10 in September.

Rain days increase to 14 in July, 15 in August and 16 in September, the commission reports.

Like June, October is a transition month between the wet and dry seasons.

Average rainfall is one inch or less per month from November through May. Some months have almost no rain at all.

The average number of rain days declines to less than two from November through January and less than one from February through May.

Manzanillo Temperatures

Temperatures are warm and moderate throughout most of the year and stay within a small range each month.

The coolest months of the year are January through April with an average high of about 85 degrees Fahrenheit or 29 Celsius, according to the commission.

The average lows during those months reach the upper 60s Fahrenheit and upper 20s Fahrenheit. Water temperatures will be cool in the mornings.

For everyone else, the best months are November through May.

Anyone planning a vacation during other times of the year should avoid Manzanillo in August and September because of the high risk of rain.

June, July and October have a moderate risk of rain and are worth a look for last-minute vacations. In those cases, it is wise to check the seven- or 10-day weather forecast before making a decision.
