November weather in Cancun is bound to discourage some people from visiting because historically it is a rainy month.

The official Caribbean hurricane season lasts from June 1 through Nov. 30. The worst months of the season are usually September and October, but some destinations still get a lot of rain in November. Cancun is one of those destinations.

The following climate averages are based on a 30-year history from Mexico's National Water Commission and will vary each year.

November Rainfall

It could be worse. Total rainfall reaches nearly 10 inches in September and October.

November does much better with an historical average of a little more than five inches.

Because October is so bad and December gets about four inches, the odds of rain are heavier in the first half of the month and lighter in the second half.

Another way of planning for weather is by looking at the number of days it rains each month.

Cancun in November averages 12 rain days, which is better than the 14 and 16 days respectively for September and October.

It is only slightly worse than the brief rainy season in June.

Cancun gets quite warm during the summer with average high temperatures above 90 degrees Fahrenheit.

November temperatures are still warm with highs around 85 degrees on a typical day and lows around 73 degrees.

Sea water temperatures usually hover about halfway between the daily highs and daily lows, which means it is still comfortable for swimming.

But trade winds can make swimming cooler and more uncomfortable. Trade winds are moderate in November but start to pick up.

Whether to Go

Four other months during the year have higher rainfall than Cancun in November.

That makes November a below average month to visit. Reasons to go that month include the possibility of lower prices for hotels.

But daytime temperatures are still warm enough to enjoy the beaches and other outdoor activities.
