Cancun weather in April is ideal for anyone who wants to visit this Mexican resort city for the first time—or the second or third time.
No month in Cancun during the entire year has less total rainfall or fewer days of rain than April, according to Servicio Meteorológico Nacional, Mexico’s national meteorology service.
Cancun on the Caribbean coast of Mexico is a hugely popular hotel and resort destination. It is known for beaches, nightlife and nearby Mayan ruins at Chichen Itza.
It also is attractive to visitors because of easy access from U.S. airports and low airline ticket prices compared to other, more distant destinations in the Caribbean.
Temperatures in April
Cancun temperatures in April are nearly ideal because they have risen enough to make water temperatures comfortable for swimming most of the time. They are often chilly in the middle of the winter, as we have found out from several trips there.
The average high temperature in Cancun during April is 89 degrees Fahrenheit or nearly 32 degrees Celsius, according to Servicio Meteorológico Nacional.
The average low temperature is 74 degrees Fahrenheit or 23 Celsius. The seawater is usually comfortable for swimming because it hovers between the high and low air temperatures during the day.
January through March have high temperatures in the low to mid 80s Fahrenheit or mid 20s Celsius. But nighttime temperatures are cool enough during those months to make swimming in the ocean uncomfortable and sometimes nearly impossible.
By comparison, summer months have high temperatures in the low 90s Fahrenheit and low 30s Celsius, but they also have more rain.
Rainfall in April
The lack of rain is the biggest reason to vacation in Cancun during April.
Cancun rainfall in April is a little more than one inch, according to Servicio Meteorológico Nacional. The month is part of a brief dry season that ends that month and starts in February. February and March average about one and a half to two inches total. July also has a brief dry season with lower than average rainfall at about two inches.
April is the best month of the year for the fewest number of days that it rains. On average, the city has only four days of rain.
By comparison, September and October average 10 inches of rain and 15 days with rain during the peak months of the Caribbean hurricane season. When it rains then, it often rains hard.
Vacation planners will find that Cancun weather in April makes that time of the year hard to ignore.
