Cancun weather in August is a hot and slightly rainy month.

It should be no surprise that August is the hottest month of the year in Cancun.

This hugely popular Caribbean beach destination attracts more than five million tourists every year, according to the Cancun Convention and Visitors Bureau. It is the number one tourist destination in Mexico.

Tourists flock there in part because of its convenient location on the northern Caribbean coast of Mexico and short flight times from U.S. destinations.

But temperatures make the city more attractive some months than others.

Cancun Temperatures in August

Cancun has an average high temperature in August of more than 92 degrees Fahrenheit or nearly 34 Celsius, according to 30 years of data from Servicio Meteorológico Nacional, Mexico’s national meteorology service. It’s a hot month.

The average high is not only the highest of any month in Cancun but also one of the highest average temperatures for any major destination in the Caribbean.

In contrast, the average high in January is 82 degrees Fahrenheit or 28 Celsius.

The average low temperature in August is 77 degrees Fahrenheit or 25 Celsius. The average lows occur mostly at night.

Water temperatures usually range between the daily highs and lows. They will usually feel comfortable for swimming and sometimes balmy.

Cancun often has high amounts of rain during the annual Caribbean hurricane season that goes from the beginning of June to the end of November.

Cancun has an average rainfall of about four inches during August, according to Servicio Meteorológico Nacional. But rainfall spikes to nearly 10 inches each in September and October. It drops to two inches or less from February through April during the dry season.

Anyone planning to visit the city in August may want to go early in the month rather than later when the risk of rain starts to climb.

It rains on average about 10 days during the month or one out of every three days. This average is low for Caribbean destinations in August.

Is August a Good Month to Go?

August is not one of the better months to visit Cancun because of high temperatures and the growing risk of rain later in the month.

Vacation planners would be better off choosing July as a time to go, especially If summer is an appealing time to travel because of break from schools.

The average rainfall in July is about two inches over a 30-year period. But temperatures are still hot with an average only slightly lower than August.

June also is a hot month, but it averages five inches of rain.

Otherwise, consider March or April as a good time to go. Temperatures are milder and the risk of rain is much lower.
