The water was shockingly cold. The trade winds made it feel even colder.

Welcome to Cancun weather in February.

It’s hard to imagine going to a place such as Cancun and being cold. After all, Cancun is one of the top destinations in the Caribbean.

This popular vacation city on the east coast of Mexico draws millions of tourists every year because of the long strip of resorts on a white-sand beach along the outer edge of the Nichupte Lagoon.

Cancun does have warm weather throughout the year on average, but that doesn’t stop cooler weather from creeping into the area during February.

February Temperatures

The average high temperature in Cancun during February over a 30-year period is 83 degrees Fahrenheit or 29 Celsius, according to historical data from Mexico’s National Water Commission.

The average low temperature is 69 Fahrenheit or 21 Celsius.

The high temperatures during the day make land activities comfortable on most days. But it’s the nighttime lows that can make water activities uncomfortable especially on days when the trade winds are strong and bring with them a larger wind chill factor.

Low nighttime temperatures bring down the water temperature into the morning and sometimes into the afternoons.

On one visit, the ocean was empty of swimmers nearly the entire week because of cooler temperatures, strong trade winds and ocean currents that brought in cooler waters.

Brave and determined souls who ventured into the water didn’t last long.

February Rainfall

The best part of Cancun in February is the lack of rain.

Cancun’s dry season runs from February through May with an average rainfall of between one and three inches a month.

February is the second driest month of the year with average rainfall of less than two inches.

The number of days that it rains is about five during the month, which is about the same as March and April.

By comparison, Cancun averages about nine inches of rain each in September and October with 14 rain days in September and 16 in October.

Should Vacationers Go In February?

Anyone who wants to vacation in Cancun and has a choice of when to go would have better temperatures and the same chance of rain in March and April.

People who want to vacation in the Caribbean, are set on going in February and have a choice of where to go should consider somewhere farther south with warmer temperatures, such as Aruba or St. Maarten.

People who are determined to go to Cancun in February should plan on more land activities than water activities. If temperatures are normal or above normal, the odds of spending time in the water and on the beach go up.

If temperatures are lower than normal, having a list of land activities will make up for it.
