Caribbean visitors will find that San Juan weather in January has temperatures in the low 80s Fahrenheit and rainfall near the low point of the year.

Puerto Rico attracts 3 million cruise and overnight visitors every year, according to the Caribbean Tourism Organization. The largest number visit San Juan, especially on eastern Caribbean cruises.

Total visits begin to climb in December and January after the end of the annual Caribbean hurricane season. They keep climbing until the high point of the year in March.

Travelers visit San Juan in January to escape cold northern winters. The city is famous for its New World history and attractions.

San Juan Temperatures in January

Cold winters are not a problem for San Juan. The city has an average high temperature of 83 degrees Fahrenheit or 28 Celsius during January, the U.S. National Weather Service says.

It is the lowest point of the year, but it is less than one degree lower than December and February. In contrast, the average is 89 Fahrenheit or 32 Celsius from June through September.

The average low temperature for San Juan in January is 71 Fahrenheit or 22 Celsius, the weather service says. The lows take place mostly at night.

Rainfall averages about three inches during the month. It is the third lowest point of the year. February and March average about two inches each.

These three months plus April make up the dry season for the city. May is a brief rainy season when the average jumps to six inches.

Rainfall drops in June and July, then begins to pick up again from August through November.

Rain falls about 13 days on average in January. It falls nine days or less per month from February through April.

Whether to Go in January

January is the fourth best weather month of the year for San Juan for warm temperatures and low risk of rain.

February through April are better months for total weather. February and March have the lowest total risk of rain. April has a higher risk, but it also has warmer temperatures.

January is a good month to visit San Juan for anyone wanting a warm vacation in the coldest part of winter. But February through April are better choices for anyone who can wait a little longer.
