San Juan weather in April is so good that anyone planning to visit the city should consider going that month.

The cruise port at San Juan in Puerto Rico is one of the busiest in the Caribbean because of its central location and extensive New World history, especially in Old San Juan. It’s also a common starting point for cruises that go to the southern Caribbean.

The city historically offers a combination of warm temperatures and moderate risk of rain in April.

Average Temperatures in April

San Juan daytime temperatures in April average 85 degrees Fahrenheit or 30 Celsius, according to the U.S. National Weather Service. Nighttime temperatures average 73 Fahrenheit or less than 23 Celsius.

The daytime temperatures are warm enough to make swimming comfortable at local beaches. But the nighttime temperatures in combination with trade winds may make swimming a little chilly at times in the mornings. Afternoon water temperatures will feel much better.

Cruise planners may want to know that San Juan does get warmer during the summer with temperatures reaching the upper 80s Fahrenheit. But the risk of rain goes up then as well because of the Caribbean hurricane season.

Average Rainfall in April

San Juan has a rather brief dry season that goes from January through April when total rainfall averages less than four inches a month.

Total rainfall is best in February and March at less than two inches each. The average climbs to four inches in April and then changes into an eight-month rainy season.

The number of days that it rains each month is another useful piece of information for travel planners.

Even though April has more total rain than February and March, it rains about the same number of days all three months. The total is eight to nine days each.

So the risk of rain in April is about the same as February and March. When it does rain, it usually rains a little harder.

The combination of warm temperatures and moderate risk of rain make April one of the best months of the year to visit San Juan for either cruise visitors or people going there for a week or more.

It may be one reason why April is the fourth most popular month to visit Puerto Rico after March (the most popular), July and December, according to the Caribbean Tourism Organization.
