Caribbean vacationers might get a slight break from bad weather in September if they go to Dominican Republic instead of other islands in the Caribbean.

The average weather in September for Punta Cana, the major resort destination, has rainfall of four inches and a high temperature of 88 degrees Fahrenheit. It isn’t the best month for weather in Punta Cana. But it is better than many other destinations during this peak month of the Caribbean hurricane season.

Puerto Plata, another resort destination near the cruise port of Amber Cove, does even better with average rainfall of less than three inches and a high temperature of 91 Fahrenheit.

These 30-year averages come from the country’s National Meteorological Agency. Although they vary somewhat from year to year, they help vacation planners manage their expectations.

Punta Cana Weather in September

Punta Cana on the east coast of the island averages four inches of rainfall and 10 days with rain during the month.

Historically, rainfall is about the same in September as June, August and November. It is less than the five inches on average in May during a brief rainy season and six inches in October, which is the worst month of the year for rain in Punta Cana.

By comparison, Punta Cana has two to three inches of rain each month during the dry season from January through April. February through April average less than seven rain days each.

The average high temperature of nearly 88 degrees Fahrenheit or 31 Celsius makes September the warmest month of the year.

Amber Cove / Puerto Plata Weather

The average weather for the Amber Cove cruise port and Puerto Plata resort area have a rainfall of less than three inches and fewer than eight days with rain. It’s one of the better months of the year to go, especially early in the month.

Unlike Punta Cana, this area has a dry season from June through September and a rainy season that hits hard from November through January. Rainfall peaks at nine inches historically in January.

The average high temperature of 91 degrees Fahrenheit or nearly 33 Celsius in September is about the same as every month from June through October.
