Azamara Club Cruises is an upscale cruise line that emphasizes smaller ships, longer visits and more intensive shore excursions.

“Founded in 2007 and then re-launched as Azamara Club Cruises® in 2010, Azamara is a boutique upmarket cruise line ... . The company serves an up-market segment of international travelers, empty nesters with an explorer mindset that are motivated by enriching their life experiences,” the company says

Azamara, which is owned by Royal Caribbean Cruises, has three ships: Journey, Quest and Pursuit. Each can carry up to 690 passengers. Their smaller size allows them to reach some ports that are not accessible to larger ships, the company says.

It stands apart from some of the larger cruise lines by offering long stays in certain ports including some overnight stays.

The longer visits are meant to give passengers a deeper experience in each port. The company’s current marketing slogan is “stay longer, experience more”.

Even with only three ships, Azamara takes passengers to more than 260 ports in 80 countries, including 208 late night stays and 130 overnights. About 50 percent of the port visits include a nighttime experience.

Shore excursions range widely depending on whether passengers want them easy, moderate or strenuous as well as the type of activity and amount of time.

Longer excursions make Azamara different than many major cruise lines. For example, an educational tour of the history of Berlin, Germany, lasts a full 12 hours. Excursions also are more educational than recreational than major cruise lines.

Passengers will have fewer options for ATV rides or snorkeling and more options for learning the history, culture, food and other unique aspects of each cruise destination. Azamara excursions also tend to cost more than larger cruise lines.

Likewise, Azamara cruises are more expensive because of the level of services they offer. Some of them are included in the base cost of the cabin whereas they are extras with other cruise lines.

The company says that 93 percent of the staterooms have ocean views and 68 percent have a private veranda. Every suite has butler service.

According to the company, cabins have:

  • European bedding and soft goods
  • Flat screen televisions
  • New veranda decking and furniture
  • Wireless internet service in all staterooms and public areas

Azamara has trips to every major region in the world including the Caribbean, Africa, Asia, Alaska, Australia, New Zealand, the Mediterranean, Europe, South America and the South Pacific.
