Anyone who visits St. Kitts will find that the smaller Nevis island is so nearby -- it is clear to see any day -- that the temptation to visit may be quite strong.

Charlestown Nevis is the main attraction of a daytrip to the island, which is only seven miles long and five miles wide.

The town is known for its Georgian-style buildings built in the 18th and 19th centuries. Visitors also will be able to do plenty of shopping and dining.

Landmarks include the Museum of Nevis History, a two-story Georgian building that was the birthplace of Alexander Hamilton; the Christena Memorial Plaque, honoring 233 people who lost their lives in the sinking of a government ferry in 1970; and the Hamilton Estate, which are the ruins of a sugar plantation that is now a diversified farm.

If Charlestown isn't enough, visitors might try hiking in the rain forest through the nature trail at Golden Rock Plantation Inn or take the day-long climb to the top of Nevis Peak, which is 3,232 feet tall.

The Golden Rock Nature Trail at Golden Rock Plantation Inn runs along a ridge-line and down a ravine bed. It offers views of huge rain forest plants, local fruit trees and flowers.

The trail also is home to a troop of African Green Monkeys.

Hermitage Plantation Inn offers carriage rides on a two to three-mile tour through historic Gingerland and along scenic back roads. The carriages are authentic adaptations of "Victoria" styles and made out of West Indian mahogany. A local teacher leads Sunrise Tours and takes visitors to little-known areas of the Devil's Copper and New River Spring, as well as three waterfalls. The hike is moderately challenging. Call 869-469-2758 for reservations. E-mail: .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address). Web:
