The great city of Santiago, the largest in Chile and the nation’s capital, has long been thought of as the perfect place to stop over on your way to other cruise destinations in South America.
After all, the stunning landscapes, historic charm, and delectable culinary choices place Santiago atop the list of many.
Still, the important individual decision of just when to go always needs to be decided on.
Overall Climate
Santiago’s climate may be described as Mediterranean with four well-defined seasons (which are the reverse of those in the Northern Hemisphere). As such, the weather is comparable to that of central and southern California, except for the reverse in conditions at any one point in time.
In general, the best time for travel will depend for the most part on the reason for travelling. As such, let’s explore which trip fits which seasons.
The Seasons
Spring
Springtime falls between September and November and sees generally temperate conditions. As is spring, the atmosphere is fresh and the surroundings quite vivid. This time is generally good for business travels or even the traveler looking for a little adventure.
Summer
Summer is actually from December to February (remember, it’s the reverse of the north). As such, it is rather hot and dry with temperatures ranging from a low of 12 degrees Celcius to a high of 34 degrees Celcius during the days.
This time is generally good for outdoor activities. However, it’s important to have and use a good sunburn cream or other protective mechanisms.
Autumn
Autumn lasts from March to May. During this time, temperatures gradually decrease to a low of 7 degrees C up to a high of 22 degrees C during the day. Autumn, like spring, is a cooler time suited to the laid-back visitor who is looking to relax and sunbathe. Of note, there is a rainy season which begins in April and lasts all the way through to June and July.
Winter
Winter begins in June and lasts all the way through September. During this period, temperatures rarely exceed 15 degrees C. Still, the temperature does not generally go as low as freezing point. On the other hand, smog becomes a major issue during the winter months.
As one would expect, the winter months are the slowest period, with tourists preferring places such as the Caribbean where it’s warm and sunny. During this period, accommodation prices are low and attractions are either sparsely crowded or closed. Still, for skiers and winter-sports fans, winter is a great time to go.
Chile’s cities and the country in general have very changeable weather patterns. Being this far south, one must be prepared for anything even during even the optimum months of October to March.
However, with most factors considered, these months are often dependable for graceful sunshine and the promise of open air fun.
