The San Juan cruise port is one of the more exotic places that many cruise ships choose to land.

While this historic Puerto Rican city offers many Spanish colonial sites to see, it also has plenty of modern American shopping, dining and entertainment for families visiting here during a cruise.

Family Attractions


Old San Juan
This famous Spanish colonial city within a city provides many educational attractions including massive forts, mansions and other historical sites.

Arecibo Observatory
This available observatory is great for older children and adults. There they can learn about the different workings of the universe and astronomy. Younger children might find this attraction a bit boring so it is recommended for children ages 10 and older.

Arecibo Lighthouse and Historical Park
This attraction is made for families with children of all ages. The admission is $12 for adults between the ages of 13 and 64 and $10 for children 2 to 12 and seniors who are 65 or older. There is a lighthouse, historic ships to explore, and playgrounds as well as many other sites to see.

Child Friendly Dining


Senor Frog
Senor Frog is a chain restaurant that many families enjoy at home. While on a cruise it is sometimes nice to head somewhere that is familiar where children enjoy eating.

Jam Run Bar and Bistro Moderne
This restaurant looks family friendly from the time that one steps through the door. There are small child sized furniture and toys in a play area as well as a TV with DVDs playing cartoons so that parents can relax for a few drinks while their children play and are entertained.

Favorite Family Beaches


Seven Seas Beach
This government-run beach offers many modern luxuries that are not always found at beaches. It has modern bathrooms and lifeguards on duty, making it a safe option for families traveling with little ones.

Escambron Beach
Escambron is a small beach that just outside of San Juan. It offers some great snorkeling with unique fish that can be seen. It is a short cab ride from the port and open Monday-Thursday from 8 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. and Friday-Sunday and holidays from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m.

Family Shopping


The Outlet/Route 66 Mall
Route 66 Mall offers outlets that will appeal to shoppers of all ages. It also has a movie theater making it a popular destination when there the weather is less than desired. There are a wide variety of common outlets including the Gap, Tommy Hilfiger, Ralph Lauren, and Nike.

Adventures and Excursions


El Yunque National Forest
This national forest has a variety of different activities available for families. It has hiking, waterfalls, and natural pools to see and enjoy. Plus there is a ranger-led tour that offers a lot of information for guests to learn about the rainforest.

Aventuras Tierra Adentro
A variety of different types of adventure are available. Adventures include caving and rock climbing, and families can even learn about how to be able to use rope and rescue techniques.

San Juan has some exciting excursions available for visitors to the island. It has a wide variety of attractions and favorite family dining that will remind families of home.
