The average weather for Costa Rica in September is fairly dry on the Caribbean coast and very wet on the Pacific coast.

Costa Rica has two major cruise ports on either side of the country. Limon serves western Caribbean cruises and Puntarenas receives Pacific coast cruises.

The country is popular with cruise and stayover visitors because of the many eco tourism experiences along with Mayan ruins and other attractions.

It is especially known for rainforests that offer zip lining and hiking. But those rainforests come as a result of heavy rains during most of the year.

Limon Weather in September

The average weather for the Limon cruise port in September has nearly six inches of rainfall and 14 days with rain, according historical records from the Costa Rica National Meteorological Institute.

Those amounts are similar to other Caribbean destinations during September, which is the most active month of the Caribbean hurricane season.

By comparison, Limon has about 17 inches of rain in July and December, the two wettest months of the year.

The cruise port stays warm in September with an average high temperature of 87 degrees Fahrenheit or nearly 31 Celsius. The average low temperature is 73 Fahrenheit or about 23 Celsius. The lows occur mostly at night.

Puntarenas Weather in September

The weather in Puntarenas is much worse than Limon during the month. The average rainfall is nearly 13 inches and rain falls about 24 days during the month.

September is the worst month of the year for rain in Puntarenas. The area has a distinct rainy season that goes from May through November with heavy rainfall every month.

It also a distinct dry season from December through April when total rainfall averages one inch per month or less.

September temperatures are about the same as every other month during the rainy season. The average high temperature is 89 degrees Fahrenheit or about 32 Celsius. The average low is 74 Fahrenheit or 23 Celsius.

Anyone who wants to go to either point may experience better than average weather at Limon and worse than average at Puntarenas.
