Costa Rica’s weather in October is like just about any other month when it comes to rain—there is a lot of it.

Costa Rica is a major eco tourism destination thanks to its lush rain forests, jungle trails and river rafting.

But that lushness is the result of rain that falls consistently and heavily throughout the year.

Some locations receive quite a bit more or less than others. Two of the most important destinations for cruise visitors are Limon on the Caribbean coast and Puntarenas on the Pacific Coast.

The following numbers are based on 30-year averages. Actual results will vary from year to year.

The Caribbean hurricane season usually reaches its peak activity in September and October, but it doesn’t matter much for the Caribbean port of Limon.

Limon receives an average of about 8.5 inches of rain in October, which is a lot for a Caribbean destination but not that much for Limon.

By comparison, Limon sees about 16 inches or more in July and December.

The total number of days it rains is 17, which is similar to many other Caribbean destinations in October but only about average for Limon.

In other words, when it rains, it rains a lot.

When we visited Limon and took an excursion in the mountains, we saw plenty of clouds and rain in the distance, but we never experienced any rain in our location.

Temperatures are comfortable this time of year with an average high of 87 degrees Fahrenheit and an average low of 72.

Limon has some of the most consistent temperatures in the region with average highs in the upper 80s throughout almost the entire year.

Average lows hover in the low 70s for the entire year as well.

Puntarenas Rainfall

Puntarenas has a worse weather month in October than Limon with average rainfall reaching more than 11 inches.

Unlike Limon, Puntarenas has a much greater variety of rain levels throughout the year.

In fact, it’s pretty much bone dry from January through March.

While it receives heavy rain in October, it’s even more wet thanks to the fact that it rains on average 24 days during the month. There is little escaping it.

Puntarenas Temperatures

Like Limon, Puntarenas stays warm with an average high temperature of 89 degrees Fahrenheit, which is consistent with most other months of the year.

The average low temperature is 74 degrees. Again, Puntarenas has consistent low temperatures throughout the year, almost always averaging in the low 70s.

Whether to Go

Costa Rica weather in October is good for Limon and bad for Puntarenas.

Yes, the odds are good that someone taking a western Caribbean cruise with a stop in Limon will experience at least cloud cover and possibly rain.

But that kind of weather is common for Limon.

Puntarenas is a different story. October is one of the worst months to visit and should be avoided if possible.
