Costa Rica weather in July has heavy rains on the Pacific coast and even heavier rains on the Caribbean coast.

The Central American country of Costa Rica has a port at Limón that is a common port of call for “exotic” western Caribbean cruises, also sometimes called Central America cruises.

For Pacific and Panama Canal cruises, the port at Puntarenas on the Pacific coast also is a common port of call.

Heavy rains are common in Costa Rica, which has lush rain forests as a result. But historically, they are especially heavy in July because of the annual Caribbean and Pacific hurricane seasons.

Limón has an average rainfall in July of 17 inches, according to historical records from the Costa Rica National Meteorological Institute. It is the second highest level of the year after December.

This compares to brief dry seasons of six inches in September and eight inches in March.

On average, it rains 22 days during the month, the highest of the year. It compares to a low point of 14 days in September.

Temperatures stay comfortable with an average high of 85 degrees Fahrenheit or about 30 Celsius. The average low temperature is 73 Fahrenheit or 23 Celsius.

Puntarenas Weather in July

The Pacific cruise port of Puntarenas also has heavy rains throughout the year, but not as much as Limón.

The average rainfall is seven inches in July, according to the country’s meteorological institute. It rains on average 18 days during the month. This compares to a low point of only two days in January and February during the Puntarenas dry season.

Puntarenas is both drier and warmer than Limón. Average high temperatures reach the mid 90s Fahrenheit during the winter but drop in July to about 90 Fahrenheit or 32 Celsius. The average low temperature in July is 74 Fahrenheit or 24 Celsius.

The country’s capital at San Jose in the interior is closer to Puntarenas than Limón, so it has similar rainfall to Puntarenas, although slightly wetter.Rainfall averages eight inches in July, down from more than 10 inches in June.

San Jose is in the cooler interior of the country.  The average high temperature is 77 Fahrenheit or 26 Celsius. The average low is 61 Fahrenheit or 17 Celsius.
