Costa Rica weather in August is fully into the rainy season with heavy rainfall on both the Caribbean and Pacific coasts.

Costa Rica in Central America has two active cruise ports. One is Limón on the Caribbean coast. The other is Puntarenas on the Pacific coast.

Heavy rains don’t deter cruise ships from visiting either port. But some months have less rain than others and are better for visitors.

Limón on the Caribbean coast has an average rainfall of nearly 13 inches in August, according to the Costa Rica National Meteorological Institute. Although the rainfall is heavy, it isn’t as bad as the 17 inches historically in July.

August’s risk of rain is twice as high as the brief “dry” seasons of six inches in September and eight inches in March. It’s a rainy country any month of the year.

The average rainfall in August is higher than any other major destination in the Caribbean.

It rains an average of 19 days during the month, the third highest of the year. That compares to a low of 14 days in September.

Temperatures are comfortable with an average high of 86 degrees Fahrenheit or about 30 Celsius. But expect high humidity. The average low temperature, which is mainly at night, is 72 degrees Fahrenheit or 22 Celsius.

Puntarenas Weather in August

Puntarenas on the Pacific coast also has heavy rains during the year. It’s just not as bad as Limón.

The average rainfall is nine inches in August, according to the country’s National Meteorological Institute. It rains on average 22 days during the month, which is high compared to most destinations in the region. This compares to a low point of only two days in January and February during the Puntarenas dry season.

The average daytime temperature in August is about 90 degrees Fahrenheit or 32 Celsius. The average nighttime temperature is 74 degrees Fahrenheit or 24 Celsius.

San Jose Weather in August

San Jose, which is near Puntarenas, has an average rainfall of 10 inches in August, up from more than eight inches in July.

San Jose is in the interior of the country, which has cooler temperatures.  The average daytime temperature is 77 Fahrenheit or 26 Celsius. The average nighttime temperature is 62 Fahrenheit or 17 Celsius.
