Best and Worst Months to Visit Trinidad

Like many Caribbean destinations, the island of Trinidad has best times to visit based on weather. It also has some risky times that almost guarantee rain.

Trinidad lies deep in the southern Caribbean off the southeast coast of Venezuela next to its sister island of Tobago. Trinidad is so far south that it receives few cruise visitors. Instead, most of the people who visit there reach it by airline.

It is no surprise that the most popular month to visit is in February during the island’s world famous Carnival, which is held on the Monday and Tuesday before Ash Wednesday.

But the island also is popular during other months of the year with people who visit to experience the islands’ famous culture, according to statistics from the Caribbean Tourism Organization.

Even though Trinidad is popular during Carnival in February, it also receives nearly as many visitors in December, which is the beginning of the dry season and a chance for northerners to escape from winter.

Other popular months include March and April during warmer spring weather and June through August when schools are on break for families.

The least popular months are the peak times of storm activity during the hurricane season—September through November.

Monthly Weather

Even though most Caribbean destinations see the worst weather in September and October, Trinidad is one of the few to have its worst weather in August, based on statistics from the World Weather Organization.

Average rainfall during August is about 10 inches total compared to about eight inches in July, September and October.

It averages about six inches of rain in June and a little less than six in October.

The dry season is a different story. December averages about three inches of rain, drops to less than two in January and February and then to one or less in March and April.

Another way to look at the rainfall is based on the average number of days that it rains each month.

June through August average about 20 days each while March and April average only about six days.

Temperatures are not an issue any month of the year. The average high temperature is about 90 degrees Fahrenheit with only a few degrees variation from one month to the next.

Best and Worst Months to Go

For good weather, clearly the best months to go are March and April when it rains only an average of six days a month and total rainfall is an inch or less.

January, February and May also have good chances of decent weather.

June through August are somewhat popular months to visit, but they also are the worst months to visit because of the high risk of heavy rain.
