The average weather in St. Thomas during April is similar to other Caribbean islands. It’s both warmer and a little more rainy.

But the risk of rain shouldn’t chase anyone away from this hugely popular port of call for eastern Caribbean cruises. The island, which is famous for duty-free shopping, gets much wetter later in the year.

Average Temperatures

A large part of the Caribbean has winter temperatures that usually dip only about five degrees below summer temperatures.

St. Thomas is no different. The average high temperature in April is 87 degrees Fahrenheit or about 30 Celsius, according to historical data from the U.S. National Weather Service. The average low is 74 Fahrenheit or 23 Celsius.

The average temperatures are only about one and a half degrees higher than the coolest months of the year, which are December, January and February.

Average water temperatures stay between the daytime highs and nighttime lows. So the water usually will feel chilly in the mornings and comfortable by mid afternoon.

For that reason, visitors may want to do land activities early in the day and water activities later in the day.

Average Rainfall

February and March are the driest months of the year at St. Thomas with an average rainfall of about one and a half inches a month.

April has about twice that amount at nearly three inches historically during the month. Average rainfall stays at about three inches each month until September through November. It then jumps up to an average between five and six inches. For that reason, those months are the least popular times to visit.

An average of three inches of rain during the month is about average for many Caribbean islands. It is usually not enough to ruin a vacation.

St. Thomas weather in April is not as ideal as March for a combination of warming temperatures and low risk of rain. But it is better than the colder winter months or the wetter fall months.
