St. Lucia car rental companies are easy to find for Caribbean cruise visitors and long-term vacationers alike.

Having personal transportation allows the tourists the ability to travel at one’s own pace and gives more opportunities to sight see for those with a broader range of interests .

From basic to extravagant, any desired choice can be satisfied, including jeeps and 4-wheel-drive vehicles . These can all be booked in advance or when arriving at the airport, hotel or the car rental agency.

Visitors should be aware of several tips if renting a car on the island.

Driving is on the left side of the road, and seat belts are required. If visitors to St. Lucia don’t possess an international drivers license, it is necessary to purchase a temporary permit, which costs about $22 U.S. and is valid for three months.

These permits can be obtained from either of St. Lucia’s airports, the immigration and police departments, and at most car rental companies.

Because St. Lucia is a volcanic island, many roads are extremely winding and most have no lane shoulders, so caution is highly recommended, particularly when driving through the mountainous jungle-like terrain with limited visibility.

St. Lucia has two airports. The largest, near Vieux Fort Quarter, is Hewanorra International Airport, used primarily for larger flights from the U.S. and Europe. The other is George F.L. Charles Airport in Castries, and it services air transportation within the Caribbean.

Car rental companies are located at both airports, but because Hewanorra is larger, there is a greater selection of rental agencies from which to choose.
