World's Largest Cruise Ship to Sail

Harmony of the Seas is about to make its debut as the largest cruise ship in the world.

The ship from Royal Caribbean International will have 16 guest decks and carry 5,497 passengers at double occupancy in 2,747 staterooms. It will launch in May 2016.

It continues to Royal Caribbean seven-neighborhood concept that organizes locations in a city-like structure. They are Boardwalk, Central Park, the Royal Promenade, the Pool and Sports Zone, Spa and Fitness Center, Youth Zone and Entertainment Place.

The ship will have the tallest water slide in the world among cruise ships, the company says.

The Ultimate Abyss will stand more than 150 feet above sea level with two twisting, side-by-side slides that have a 100-foot drop from Deck 16 to Deck 6. The actual length of each slide is 216 feet. The slides will have sound effects to magnify the experience.

Harmony of the Seas is scheduled for itineraries in both Europe and the Caribbean.

Ovation of the Seas to Debut

Royal Caribbean also is rolling out another ship in the spring of 2016. Ovation of the Seas will be the company’s first ship to be built specifically for cruises to China.

The Quantum-class ship will feature the North Star, an observation capsule that rises more than 300 feet high for panoramic views of the area. The Two70 is a social space that evolves into a multifunctional entertainment venue at night. SeaPlex is the largest indoor activity space at sea. It offers bumper cars, basketball and roller-skating among others. The ship has 18 restaurants onboard.

Two70 has floor-to-ceiling windows that can display real or projected images using 18 projectors. They will create an ambient display more than 100 feet wide and more than 20 feet tall. Nighttime entertainment will have live performers working with a troupe of six agile Roboscreens.
