Rose Hall Great House Excursion Tips

Rose Hall Great House is a chance to visit the home of the “white witch of Rose House” and hear a few horror stories to chill the bones under a hot Jamaican sun.

The Georgian mansion is an 18th century plantation home that was refurbished in the 1960s. Decor and furnishings reflect the 18th century lifestyle. Tropical gardens add a bonus for visitors.

Legend claims that a British woman named Annie Palmer, who spent most of her life in Haiti, learned voodoo and witchcraft there. She moved to Jamaica and married the owner of the Rose Hall plantation.

Palmer murdered her husband, two later husbands and many male slaves before being murdered by a slave. Author Benjamin Radford in 2007 said the legend was false.

The daytime tour is 90 minutes long and requires walking up and down quite a few steps. The tour includes access to the mansion and gardens as well as a sample of “witches brew”.

Nighttime tours have the same features as the daytime tours but emphasize the ghost stories. Rose Hall doesn’t recommend the nighttime tours for children under the age of 10.

Rose Hall Great House is a 35 minute drive northeast of the Montego Bay cruise port for anyone who goes there by taxi or rental car.

Entrance prices for the mansion and gardens at the time of this writing are $20 per person for ages 12 and over and $10 per person for ages 4 to 11. Discounts sometimes are available at the estate’s website at rosehall.com. A recent one offered 10 percent off ticket prices.

Some cruise lines offer shore excursions for about $35 per person. Total excursion time is about three hours including the 90 minute tour, brief shopping and travel back and forth by bus.

Rose Hall is actually a 7,000-acre development that includes the restored mansion, golf courses, resorts and vacation homes.
