Costa Rica Weather in May

Costa Rica weather in May gets much wetter on both the Caribbean and Pacific coasts. May is not a good month to visit either cruise destination.

The Caribbean cruise port at Limon has an average rainfall of 13 inches in May, according to the Costa Rica National Meteorological Institute. It rains an average of 18 days during the month.

Rainfall is a big jump from the low point of six inches in September and eight inches in March.

Temperatures stay comfortable with an average high of 87 degrees Fahrenheit or about 31 Celsius. The average low is 73 Fahrenheit or 23 Celsius.

The change in weather from April to May is much more drastic at the Pacific cruise port of Puntarenas.

Average rainfall leaps from about one inch in April to eight inches in May, historical records from the meteorological institute show. The total days with rain jumps as well from eight to 19.

April is the final month of an annual dry season that begins in December. May is the beginning of the annual hurricane season that goes until November.

Puntarenas is much warmer throughout the year than Limon. Average high temperatures reach into the mid 90s Fahrenheit during the winter and actually drop to about 92 Fahrenheit or 33 Celsius in May. The average low is 75 Fahrenheit or 24 Celsius.

The country's capital at San Jose in the interior is closer to Puntarenas than Limon, so it has similar weather to Puntarenas. Rainfall averages nine inches in May, up from about two inches in April.

The average high temperature is 79 Fahrenheit or 26 Celsius. The average low is 63 Fahrenheit or 17 Celsius.

Anyone who wants to visit Costa Rica on a cruise or for a longer overnight vacation should avoid the country's weather in May. Limon is best in March and Puntarenas is best from December through April.
