Grand Cayman Crystal Caves Excursion

Caves are rare on Caribbean islands, so the Grand Cayman Crystal Caves stand out as an unusual tourist attraction.

The Crystal Caves, 69 Northside Road, Old Man Bay, Northside, are about a 35-minute drive or about 19 miles east of the George Town cruise port. Some cruise lines offer them as a shore excursion, so visitors can take a tour bus or rental car to get there.

Guided tours take about one and a half hours and go through rainforests as well as the three caves. Actual time in the caves is about 45 minutes, the rainforest walk is 30 minutes and the final 15 minutes goes to exploring and shopping. Each tour group has a maximum of 20 people.

The caves consist of a lake cave, open-ceiling cave and roots cave. Their jagged formations include stalagmite and stalactite crystal formations.

The Crystal Caves excursion is new for Grand Cayman because of the amount of time it took to buy them and the surrounding land.

In the 1990s, Christian and Ole Sorensen explored the caves and began talks with the Cayman Islands government about developing them as a tourist attraction, according to the Crystal Caves website.

“It took almost another two decades to purchase the various parcels which encompass the caves and surrounding rainforest, as well as devise a route to the landlocked site from the main road,” the website says.

Ticket Prices

Tickets for anyone who books a tour on their own rather than going through an excursion operator (which includes transportation) are $40 for adults and $30 for children. Prices are subject to change.

One cruise line was offering the excursion starting at $110 per person for a three-hour trip including travel time. An international excursion company offered it for $87 plus extra stops at Wreck of the Ten Sail, Pedro St. James Castle and Tortuga Rum Company. So it pays to compare prices.

Note that all visitors who go on their own must pre-book their tours. The phone number is (345) 925-3001 or go to the website at https://www.caymancrystalcaves.com.
