Car Rentals in the British Virgin Islands

Tortola, The British Virgin Islands Tourist Board
Car rentals are one of the many ways to get around in the British Virgin Islands -- at least on some of them.

The British Virgin Islands are a British Territory, located in the Caribbean.

The territory consists of more than 50 islands and cays. Only 15 are inhabited.

The largest and most densely populated islands are Tortola, Jost Van Dyke, Virgin Gorda, and Anegada.

The total population of the islands is 28,000; Tortola has the majority of residents with 23,000 living there.

Because of this, Tortola tends to offer the most in the way of transportation.

Boat is a popular and reliable way to get around in the British Virgin Islands. The ferry service is fairly inexpensive and operates on a frequent schedule.

The North Sound Express Ferry runs from Trellis Bay on Beef Island, near Tortolas' airport, to the north end of Virgin Gorda. The ferry makes stops along the way.

The New Horizon Ferry travels from the west end of Tortola to Jost's Great Harbour.

Planes can be chartered to fly between islands. This is one of the more expensive forms of transportation.

Fly BVI is one of the more established charter plane companies.

Taxis can be rented at all of the larger islands. Tortola and Virgin Gorda both have well developed taxi services.

Taxis do not have meters, and the fares are set rates. It is important to agree on the rate before getting into the taxi.

Several of the taxis are open air and can seat up to 12 people.

Renting a car is one of the most convenient ways of traveling around the British Virgin Islands, especially when exploring less developed islands.

The roads vary in condition, some being fairly easy to navigate and others being steep, winding roads. Having a good map is advised, and even then, it may not be entirely accurate.

Driving is on the left side of the road in the British Virgin Islands. Drivers must be at least 25 years of age to rent a car.
