Bahamas weather in May usually has an ample amount of warmth, but it is slightly rainier than previous months.

May is the beginning of the rainy season in the Bahamas, but there is little chance of severe thunderstorms that come mainly later in the year.

The Bahamas are the most popular destination in the Caribbean region, although they lie just outside of the Caribbean in the Atlantic Ocean. They are popular because of the large number of cruise ships that visit and because of the nation’s close proximity to the United States. Nassau and Freeport are the two dominant destinations.

Nassau Weather in May

Nassau is the capital of the Bahamas and the most popular place to visit, largely because of the cruise port, many resorts and tourist attractions on the island.

Nassau has an average high temperature of 85 degrees Fahrenheit or 29 Celsius in May, according to the Bahamas Department of Meteorology. The average low temperature is 72 degrees Fahrenheit or 22 Celsius.

Rainfall increases in May because the month is a brief rainy season for many Caribbean destinations. In Nassau, it rains on average 14 days during the month.

Historically, the average amount of rainfall is about 4.5 inches. By comparison, rainfall averages only two inches a month from December through March and three inches in April.

The sea temperature averages a balmy 79 degrees Fahrenheit or 26 Celsius around Nassau, making it comfortable. Seawater temperatures are cooler in the mornings and warmer in the afternoons.

Freeport Weather in May

Freeport is the northernmost island in the Bahamas. It is usually the first stop for many cruise ships, especially the ones that visit only the Bahamas.

Because of its location, temperatures are slightly cooler than in Nassau.

The average high temperature in Freeport is 83 degrees Fahrenheit or 28 Celsius. The average low temperature is 71 degrees Fahrenheit or 22 Celsius.

Freeport sees an increase of rain as it marks the beginning of the wet, or hurricane season, which runs until November.

Average rainfall in Freeport in May is slightly higher than Nassau. Freeport receives, on average, 5.6 inches during the month. It rains on average 14 days in the month of May.

The chances of hurricanes are low to non-existent. Heavy rains from nearby tropical storms and hurricanes are more likely during the annual Caribbean hurricane season.

Inagua Weather in May

Inagua is the southernmost island in the Bahamas. Its temperatures are slightly warmer as a result.

The average high temperature in Inagua is 86 degrees Fahrenheit or 30 Celsius. The average low temperature is 73 degrees Fahrenheit or 23 Celsius.

Inagua receives slightly less rain, on average, than its northern counterparts.

The average rainfall amount in Inagua is 3.3 inches. It rains on average 12 days.

Sea temperatures average a comfortable 81 degrees Fahrenheit or 27 Celsius.

Should I Visit the Bahamas in May?

Though slightly rainier than earlier months, the Bahamas still receive enough sunshine and warm weather to make May a good month to visit. But anyone with a flexible vacation schedule should consider going in April instead, although April temperatures are slightly cooler.
