People may think that warmth and sunshine must come naturally to Bahamas weather in June, but only the first part is accurate.

Yes, the Bahamas are warm during June, the first true month of the summer. But these hugely popular cruise islands near Florida have the second highest amount of rain during the year in June.

The high rainfall is unusual because the Caribbean hurricane season doesn't begin to hit the region with much force until later in the summer.

The two worst months for rainfall for most islands is September and October. For the Bahamas, the worst months for rain are August and June, according to historical records from the Bahamas Meteorology Department.

That doesn't stop more than 140,000 tourist from visiting Nassau on New Providence Island and Freeport on Grand Bahama Islands during June, according to the Caribbean Travel Organization. Several hundred thousand more visit by cruise.

June is the fourth warmest month of the year with an average high of nearly 88 degrees Fahrenheit or 31 Celsius.

July, August and September are slightly warmer at about 90 Fahrenheit or 32 Celsius.

The average low temperature, which occurs mostly at night, is about 74 degrees Fahrenheit or 23 Celsius.

Average Rainfall

The average rainfall in Nassau exceeds eight inches during the month over the last 30 years, historical data shows.

August averages nearly 10 inches. Other months only slightly worse than June are July, September and October at nearly seven inches each.

June has a small advantage over those months because of the average number of days that it rains. For June, the total is 15 days while July and September have 17 days of rain and August has 19 days.

Anyone who wants to visit the Bahamas during periods of low rain will find that November through April are the dry months with total rainfall as low as one to two inches.

But those months also have the lowest temperatures of the year. Averages highs reach the upper 70s Fahrenheit -- good temperatures for land activities but not so good for water activities.

Is June a Good Time to Go?

The heavy rainfall that historically hits the Bahamas in June makes the month a risky time to go, especially for anyone planning a week there.

They would face a lower risk by going in May when the average rainfall is four inches and the average high temperature is 85 Fahrenheit or 30 Celsius.

A visit in June is less risky for people taking an eastern Caribbean cruise that includes a brief stop in Nassau or Freeport. Eastern Caribbean cruises are more likely to visit other islands that have a much lower chance of rain.
