May weather in Antigua usually brings more rainfall than normal for the early part of the year.

For most Caribbean destinations, the month of May is a brief rainy season. Antigua is no exception.

The May rainy season doesn’t have the same downpours as September and October during the height of the hurricane season. But historically it brings more rain than any month between December and August when tourism climbs.

Tourism statistics also show that May is a less popular time to visit than seven other months during the year.

Average Rainfall in May

Antigua is a popular stop on eastern Caribbean cruises from January through April in large part because average rainfall ranges between about 1.5 and 2.7 inches over the last 30 years, according to historical data from the Antigua and Barbuda Meteorology Services.

The average rainfall in May jumps up to 4.4 inches during the month. The only other months that experience more rain are September through November at more than five inches each.

The number of days that it rains is another way of judging whether a month has good weather over time.

From January through April, the number of rain days averages between eight and 10. In April, the average also is 10, which means that the typical rainfall in May is simply heavier on average than the previous four months.

Average May Temperatures

A brighter spot for Antigua weather in May is the temperatures, which continue their climb out of the cooler winter months.

Antigua has average high temperatures that range between 83 degrees Fahrenheit in the winter and 87 degrees in the summer.

Although temperatures in the low 80s can be comfortable for land activities, the cooler seawater with strong trade winds can make swimming uncomfortable.

The average high temperature for May falls midway between the year’s highs and lows at 85.6 degrees Fahrenheit.

The island’s average lows, which take place mainly at night, hover around 75.7 degrees.

Is May a Good Time to Go?

Anyone planning a long-term stay or cruise visit that includes Antigua would be better off choosing another month if there is flexibility in their schedule.

The weather in May is not as bad as September through November, but March, April, June and July all have a combination of warm temperatures and lower odds of getting rain.

However, the fact that rainfall increases and tourism drops in May sometimes will create more opportunities for price breaks on cruises and resorts.
