Roatan Passport Requirements

U.S. and Canadian citizens entering Honduras must present a roundtrip/outbound ticket and valid passports that will not expire for at least thirty days after arrival. Cruise visitors must present their shipboard ID cards.

“A U.S. passport valid for at least three months from the date of entry is required to enter Honduras. Though not required by law, some travelers have reported difficulty departing Honduras using a passport with less than three months of validity beyond the date of departure. A visa is not required, but tourists must provide evidence of return or onward travel,” according to the U.S. State Department.

“Parents should not rely on birth certificates for their children’s travel; rather, prior to travel they should obtain U.S. passports for infants and minors born in the United States. U.S. citizens are encouraged to carry a photocopy of their U.S. passports with them at all times, so that if questioned by local officials proof of identity and U.S. citizenship are readily available.”

Some U.S. airlines may not permit passengers to board flights to Honduras without such a ticket. Passports should be in good condition; Honduras immigration may deny entry if the passport is damaged in any way.

U.S. citizens should take special care to secure their passports while traveling as it can be time-consuming and difficult to acquire new proof of citizenship to facilitate return travel should the passport be lost or stolen.

Prior to departure from the U.S., sea travelers must have a valid U.S. passport or other original proof of U.S. citizenship, such as a certified U.S. birth certificate with a government-issued photo ID.

All Americans traveling by air outside the United States are required to present a passport or other valid travel document to enter or re-enter the United States.

While a U.S. passport is not mandatory for sea travel, it is recommended since it is a more readily recognized form of positive proof of citizenship.

The U.S. Consulate General recommends traveling with a valid U.S. passport to avoid delays or misunderstandings.  A lost or stolen passport is also easier to replace when outside of the United States than other evidence of citizenship.

For more information about entry and exit requirements, contact the Embassy of Honduras at 3007 Tilden Street NW, Washington, DC 20008, telephone (202) 966-7702, or a Honduran consulate in Atlanta, Chicago, Houston, Miami, Los Angeles, New Orleans, New York, Phoenix, or San Francisco.

Another source of tourist information is the Honduras Institute of Tourism at 1-800-410-9608 (in the United States) or at 1-800-222-TOUR (8687) (within Honduras only) or visit the web site at http://www.honduras.com.

A valid Canadian passport is required for Canadians intending to visit Honduras. The passport has to be valid for at least six months beyond the date of your expected departure from the country.

Canadian tourists may travel within any of the C-4 countries (Honduras, Nicaragua, El Salvador and Guatemala) for a 90 day period. The 90 days begins at the first point of entry of any of the C-4 countries. Fines are applied for travelers who exceed this 90 day limit although a request for an extension can be made for up to 30 days by paying a fee before the 90 days limit expires.

These requirements are subject to change at any time. It is the traveler’s responsibility to check with the country’s embassy or its consulates for up-to-date information.
