Cozumel Monthly Weather Averages: Rain, Temperatures

| Cruise ships visit Cozumel more often in the spring. |
Cozumel’s monthly weather is one of the warmest and wettest in the Caribbean for any month of the year.
Mexico’s largest island draws millions of visitors every year because of its convenient location, great beaches, Mayan ruins and other tourist attractions.
Its popularity reaches a high point with western Caribbean cruises in the late winter and early spring during the dry season.
Popularity reaches a low point during the rainy season from late summer to late fall.

The Cozumel rainy season goes from June through November. May and December are transition months between the rainy season and dry season.
Cozumel has one of the highest monthly rainfall averages in the Caribbean. That said, rainfall is low during the winter and spring months, but it is often quite high during the late summer and fall months.
Mexico’s largest island has a dry season, especially in March and April when the average rainfall averages less than two inches, according to Mexico’s national meteorology service (Servicio Meteorológico Nacional). Rainfall peaks at an average of nearly 10 inches in September and October during the annual Caribbean hurricane season.
Visitors also should look at the average number of days that it rains during a month. Historically, they reach a low of only four days in March and April. They reach a high of 16 days in October.
March and April are the best weather months to visit because of an ideal combination of warm temperatures and low risk of rain. But they also are more expensive because they are more popular times to visit.
Cozumel Monthly Temperatures
Cozumel’s monthly temperatures average 88 degrees Fahrenheit or 31 degrees Celsius for the entire year, according to Servicio Meteorológico Nacional. That average varies by only about three to four degrees each month.

The average high temperature reaches 90 degrees Fahrenheit or higher from April through September, according to Servicio Meteorológico Nacional. It is one of the few destinations in the Caribbean where high temperatures exceed 90 degrees for five months in a row.
These high temperatures along with high humidity make Cozumel less appealing for cruise and beach visitors during this time of year. The heat and humidity were stifling during one of our visits in the summer.
This popular stop on western Caribbean cruises also has a cooler nighttime climate than most destinations in the winter with average lows dropping below 70 degrees.
Nighttime usually brings the lowest temperatures to Cozumel. When the average low temperature reaches 67 degrees Fahrenheit in January and February, seawater temperatures make swimming a challenge for anyone who likes it warm.
High trade winds sometimes strike during the winter, which also can make swimming an uncomfortable experience. We saw few people in the water during our visit to the area one February. But at least the pool was warm.
