Bermuda weather in January offers one of the coolest and wettest months of the year for this western Atlantic island.

Bermuda lies about 450 miles east of the South Carolina coast. This British overseas territory is a popular destination for cruise ships, golfers and beach lovers.

But the popularity dies off in January. Tourism plunges to the lowest point of the year during the month, according to the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO). The island attracts only one fourth as many overnight visitors in January as it does during the peak summer months.

Weatherwise, January is the worst month of the year to visit Bermuda because of cooler temperatures, high levels of rain and how often it rains.

Vacation planners will find warmer temperatures and lower risk of rain from April through July. June and July are the most popular months to visit, the CTO says.

Bermuda Temperatures in January

The average high temperature for Bermuda in January is 69 degrees Fahrenheit or 21 Celsius, according to the Bermuda Weather Service. It is the same in February and March as January.

The average highs gradually increase until they reach 86 Fahrenheit or 30 Celsius in August.

Likewise, the average low of 61 Fahrenheit or 16 Celsius in January continues in February and March.

A comfortable temperature for swimming in the ocean is 70 to 78 degrees Fahrenheit, according to the National Centers for Environmental Information.

Seawater temperature in Bermuda during January is almost always too cool for swimming. The average seawater temperature during the month is 66 degrees Fahrenheit. It doesn’t increase to more than 70 Fahrenheit until May.

Bermuda Rainfall in January

Bermuda does not have snow during the winter despite the fact that it lies to the east of North Carolina. Warm waters from the gulf stream keep the island warmer than its U.S. neighbors.

It does average about five inches of rain during the month, which is one of the highest levels of the year, according to the Bermuda Weather Service. Only October and August receive more.

January is tied with December for the most days with rain during the month with a total of 17.

Whether to Go in January

January is one of the worst months of the year to visit Bermuda because of low temperatures, high risk of rain and the number of days that it rains during the month.

The island is an easy getaway during the month for people who live farther north and want relief from cold and snow.

Its location also makes it faster and cheaper to reach by air than the Caribbean islands to the far south.

Golfers will find January a good time to go if they can get some rain-free weather. Otherwise, vacation planners should visit the island during another month or travel farther south for better weather.
