They are Nassau, which is located on Providence Island and is the largest and most popular destination in the Bahamas; Freeport, which is located on Grand Bahama Island; and Great Inagua, the third largest island in the chain.
Freeport is the northernmost island, due east of West Palm Beach, FL, and usually the first stop on a Bahamas cruise.
Nassau is more than 100 miles south to southwest of Freeport. Great Inagua lies much farther south and is close to Turks and Caicos as well as Cuba and Dominican Republic.
The locations have a direct impact on their weather in December.
Nassau has an average high temperature of 79.5 degrees Fahrenheit in December. The high temperature is most common during the peak hours of the day.
The average low temperature, which occurs mainly at night, is 65.1 degrees.
The total rainfall is only two inches, which is the lowest amount of the year except for slightly lower totals in January and February.
Average rain days, which is the number of days with rain each month, is a total of eight. February through April are slightly lower.
Freeport is slightly cooler than Nassau with an average high temperature in December of 77.2 degrees. The average low is only 62.6.
It is slightly more wet as well with an average rainfall of about three inches and nine total days of rain.
Thanks to its southern location in the Bahamas chain, Great Inagua has the warmest weather of the three destinations.
The average high temperature is 84.6 degrees, and the average low is 68.9 degrees.
Total rainfall is less than two inches. The average number of rain days is six.
Whether to Go
The Bahama islands are a popular cruise destination. Nassau in particular is known for its golfing, shopping, dining and nightlife.
Beach goers will find that December is not an ideal month to visit Nassau or Freeport because of the cooler air temperatures and especially the cooler sea temperatures.
Sea surface temperature normally vary between 74 degrees at their low point in February and 83 in August.
But if other activities are attractive, the Bahamas are still a good destination in December in part because of the low risk of rain.
More adventurous visitors might consider flying from Nassau to Great Inagua for warmer weather and also a chance to experience that island’s best known attraction, which is its eco-tourism.
