About Puerto Plata

Puerto Plata is the north coast’s largest city and one of the most popular resort
destinations in Dominican Republic as well.

It is best suited to vacationers who want access to more diverse recreation and
access to a nearby major city, unlike the more remote location of Punta Cana on the
southeast coast.

A major concentration of accommodations is located at Playa Dorada, which lies just
east of Puerto Plata. It is the world’s largest resort complex with 15 resorts, a
golf course, beaches, a mall and restaurants.

Other advantages to Puerto Plata are the nearby cities of Cabarete and Sousa.
Cabarete is one of the top five kiteboarding and windsurfing locations in the world.
Sousa has small town ambience, is situated on a bay and offers bars, shops and
restaurants in addition to its own resorts. It also is known for some of the best
snorkeling and diving in the region.

Other attractions include Fort San Felipe, one of the first European forts
constructed in America; the Amber Museum near the city's central park; the Brugal
Rum Factory; Ocean World Adventure Park; and a cable car ride up the 2,600-foot-tall
Mount Isabel de Torres.

Accommodations include all-inclusive resorts, boutique hotels for anyone preferring
a more private setting, and sports-oriented hotels focusing on golf, windsurfing and
kiteboarding.

There are two 18-hole golf courses in the region. They are the nearby Playa Dorada
Golf Course and the more distant Playa Grande Golf Course, both designed by Robert
Trent Jones Sr. The Playa Dorada is located at the Playa Dorada Resort Complex and
the Playa Grande is located between the towns of Rio San Juan and Cabrera.

Anyone planning a trip to Puerto Plata will most likely arrive at and leave from the
Puerto Plata Airport – also know as Gregorio Luperon International Airport -- which
is located 11 miles from Puerto Plata.
