Sea water temperatures make swimming a challenge for anyone who likes it warm. High trade winds sometimes strike during the winter, which also can make swimming an uncomfortable experience.
Rainfall is especially heavy in the fall months, peaking at an average of nearly 10 inches in September and October during the annual Caribbean hurricane season.
April and May are the best weather months to visit because of an ideal combination of temperatures and rainfalls, but they also are more expensive times to visit as a result.
